Abstract/Summary

The effects of different levels (100 percent, 75 percent, 50 percent, and 10 percent of field capacity) of water on percent germination, germination rate (percent), plant height (cm), percent survival, sugar content (percent dry weight) and starch content (percent dry weight) of Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit (ipil-ipil) for a four-week duration was determined. The highest percent seed germination was observed at 50 percent field capacity followed by that of 75 percent field capacity. The uniformity of germination time (UGT) increased as the level of water decreased. The height obtained during the two-week treatment was highest at 100 percent field capacity followed by that of 50 percent field capacity while the lowest height was obtained at 10 percent field capacity. During the four-week treatment, the height obtained was similar at 100 percent, 75 percent and 50 percent field capacity. After four weeks of treatment, the percent survival was 100 percent at 100 percent, 75 percent and 50 percent field capacity. The percent survival at 25 percent and 10 percent field capacity was 54.55 percent and 0 percent respectively. The sugar content of the four-week old seedlings was highest at 75 percent field capacity followed by that of 50 percent field capacity and the lowest was observed in 25 percent field capacity. The starch content was highest at 75 percent field capacity followed by that of 50 percent field capacity and the lowest was in 25 percent field capacity.Percent seed germination, height and sugar content were significantly affected by different levels of water stress while starch content was not significantly affected at 0.05 level of significance based on F-test.
