Abstract/Summary
Dust sample were collected from twenty houses to estimate the prevalence of dust mites. Ten houses represented the affluent area which included Northview II, Project 6, Project 4, Kamuning, North Susana Village, Novaliches, Paranaque and Makati. Another set of ten houses in Libis and Murphy, Quezon City represented the indigent area. Flotation method using 50 percent (supersaturated) salt solution was utilized to separate mites from the surrounding dust. Identification and classification of dust mites was facilitated using stereomicroscope. The results showed no significant difference between the dust mite density in the affluent and indigent areas. Differences in terms of mean density between Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus and Dermatophagoides farinae, both in the affluent and indigent areas, were likewise insignificant using 0.05 level of significant.
