Abstract/Summary
Gawad Kalinga (GK) has been making a significant difference to the Philippine nation through building not just houses for the poor but a community that uplifts each other towards change. However, GK has taken another step further building houses to be able to build a pool of social innovators through GK’s Center for Social Innovation (CSI). And now, CSI already has sixteen (16) enterprises that have bigger vision that one may imagine for our motherland, the Philippines. This paper aims to identify, assess, and describe the practices of these social enterprises based on five different factors – Economic, Environment, Social, Operational and Strategic. This will then lead to the researchers’ recommendations for to be able to consider these enterprises fully sustainable. To be able to do this, the researchers conducted an interview with the entrepreneurs from each enterprise.
However, to overcome the challenge of start-ups on building up their network, GK was able to make an ecosystem of social innovation going towards the mission of ending poverty by 2004. This enabled each special enterprise to act as contributors to the overall sustainability of the whole ecosystem through collaborations with each other and partnerships. Indeed, GK has been a trailblazer on making a new business model to be able to bring change in the Philippines through establishing social enterprises that aims to do business that leaves no one.
