Abstract/Summary
Despite causing the American economy billions of dollars every year, time banditry has remained a crime that is generally unrecognized and thus unpunished. Unknowingly, by performing non-work related activities during official working hours, employees consequently steal from their employers a very valuable form of resource – time. The researchers recognize the great detriment that time banditry brings to corporations and business worldwide, therefore finding great relevance in finding ways to raise awareness about its nature. Upon a thorough review of pertinent literature, the researchers were able to identify several factors, which may potentially cause its occurrence in the workplace. The researchers tested the significance of these factors to the local context by administering a survey to 200 respondents. After performing several statistical methods, the researchers found factors such as job frustration, work engagement, accountability, conscientiousness and organizational commitment to be significant in the context of the study. By uncovering the most significant predictors of time banditry, this research enables managers and decision makers to direct valuable time and scarce resources in resolving issues that push employees towards committing these seemingly harmless, easily forgivable but greatly detrimental counterproductive actions.
