Abstract/Summary
Waste reduction pertains to any technique that reduces amount of waste that requires disposal. It is different from material recycling and reuse since it aims to eliminate waste from the beginning of the handling process.
This research focuses on the current management practices of four construction companies in Metro Manila that aim to minimize the wastes that they generate in their projects. It discusses the concept of waste minimization and its relevance to the construction industry by providing data and documents that would show the significant effects of these practices on the construction projects. It provides a brief description of how construction managers deal with problems on wastes and how they reduce their problems of disposal by actually trying to get rid of those things they need to dispose.
The construction companies in Metro Manila included in the study are D.M. Consunji Inc., L & M Maxco Co. Inc., Burgundy Realty Corp., and Engineering Equipment Inc. In the study, it was concluded that these companies have similar practices but have different approaches to each. It was also concluded that these practices depend on the circumstances and nature of their projects and that these practices are not policy-based. Instead, these practices are inherent in the work description of the engineers responsible.
