Abstract/Summary
Vehicle identification system using proper image-processing techniques could be achieved using plate number reading with considerably high accuracy and low processing time. The potential of using the back-propagation neural network for plate number recognition is also explored.
Acquisition of the image is done through a real-time web camera designed specifically for that purpose. Image processing techniques are used to extract the characters. Additional processing of the image is done like filtering, segmentation and scaling to the proper pixel size. This prepares the image to be inputted to the neural network.
The back-propagation neural network is applied to the character recognition process. Provided that the training of the neural network is adequate. It will give a satisfactory output.
There are various applications for this research. It can be used for security purposes and automatic plate number encoding in parking lots.
