Abstract/Summary

This study investigates children's attribution of their competence. It primarily attempts to answer the following questions: 1) What are the reasons why a child joins a contest? 2) What are the factors that influence a child before a contest? And 3) What is the status of a child's self-efficacy after winning or losing in a contest? Ten (10) pre-school children, between the ages four to six (4 - 6) year old, were gathered for in-depth interviews through purposive sampling. The data gathered were categorized and analyzed using content analysis. Results show that winning or losing does not make a difference in a child's attribution of his competence. Both winners and losers attributed their competence internally.
