Abstract/Summary
The Antonio Lopez Aldeguer boxing gym and stable in Cebu City, Philippines has produced some of the best, world-class professional boxers from the country such as Z Gorres, boom Boom Bautista, and Donnie Nietes to mention a few. ALA continues honing the skills of these boxers who have come from poverty in the hopes to alleviate themselves and their families from financial struggles they face in life. Beyond the Ropes is a look into the lives of the boxers in the gym, focusing on Donnie Ahas Nies, Genesis Asukal Servania, and Milan El Methodico Melindo who all came from poor families who went to Cebu to seek greener pastures and what they needed and need to do to attain what they consider to be the ideal life a life wherein monetary problems are no longer an issue and their personal goals of attaining success in the sport will be fulfilled. The documentary shows the world of professional boxing in the perspective of the three boxers, their famiies, coaches, managers, as well as other professionals in the world of professional boxing.
