Abstract/Summary

Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) with Integrated Abutment Bridges (IABs) has been widely used because of its certain advantages over jointed bridges in term of construction and maintenance. In other countries various studies and experiments have been carried out on existing IABs on their behavior. However, in the Philippines, only few researchers have been done on the stability and design of IABs in the country. Moreover, since IABs in the Philippines have been designed in accordance with the NSCP Vol. 2 1992, those bridges must be checked since in the yet to be released code which will be based on AASHTO Bridge Specifications 2007, some criteria for loading provisions were revised.

Bridge design checks must also be done since the transportation system is the lifeblood of the economy it makes it important for bridge engineers to ensure to maintain the durability of the bridges around the country in the coming years in order to be aligned with the concepts of sustainable design.

This study tests whether or not the bridges that have been constructed or designed with accordance to the previous code NSCP Volume 2 1997, have deficiencies with accordance to the new provisions set by AASHTO LRFD Bridge Specifications 2007, where the NSCP Volume adapts its codes. The deficiencies of those bridges may cause cracks at interior and exterior supports due to service load, or even failure at the same location due to ultimate loads. If failure occurs, retrofit measures will be proposed based on the type of failure.

The models of the bridges were created using the SAP2000 software, and the new provisions for loading were applied upon the model. From the software analysis, the ultimate bending moments, and shear and torsion were obtained and were compared with the computed strengths of the existing section designs of the girders. And it was determined, at interior supports the bridge will fail due to negative bending.

Existing bridges are deficient in accordance to AASHTO LRFD Bridge Specifications 2007 because of the new load provisions. Therefore, interior supports require strengthening at the topmost fiber of the section which experiences tension due to negative bending. The suggested composite to be used for strengthening is Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer, which is most common in retrofitting bridges.
