Abstract/Summary

Nowadays, companies are slowly shifting from traditional working teams to virtual teams. This shift is caused by the constant development and advancement in technology, especially in communications. Another reason to consider is the fact that companies look for more convenient and efficient ways to accomplish tasks. With these reasons, face to face interaction and communication is lessened between team leaders and members. The proponents sought the need to study the communication management within virtual teams. A qualitative and qualitative data analysis was done in order to find out how virtual team leaders manage communication in terms of communication channels used, skills for effective communication, dealing with technology, dealing with differences in culture and language and managing trust and relationship. Results reflected that, e-mails, phone calls, teleconferencing, and video conferencing are the common communication channels used by the team leaders and members interpersonal skills are very important in managing communication within virtual teams it was also identified that there are several problems brought about by failure or insubstantial technology that the teams sometimes experience. And from this, team managers should learn to cope and devise a way to produce the best output lastly, coordination and openness of team members to their team leaders supports a more harmonious relationship within the team, but it is still up to how the team leader handles the group. As a recommendation, researchers can widen the scope of their respondents by delving into other industries that shifts to virtual teams, and not to limit themselves to one company only.
