Abstract/Summary
Manila is one of the busiest cities in the Philippines, being the hub of a thriving metropolitan area home to over 10 million people. There is an abundance of public markets, modern shopping malls and manufacturing businesses that make up the commerce in the city which adds to the overcrowding of streets.
According to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority's (MMDA) traffic reports on the locations surrounding Estero de Aviles, Estero de Binondo and Estero de la Reina, over a thousand vehicles go through the city streets daily. In one day (6:00 am to 8:00 pm), about 1,000 vehicles went through Reina Regente. On Juan Luna Street, 1,200 vehicles were present throughout the day. Considering the narrow streets of Manila, the large volume of vehicles passing by as well as illegal parking habits of the people in that area are the causes of traffic as reported by the MMDA. Aside from traffic being one of the city's problems, an escalating threat to the lives of the people is the problem of sanitation. In pumping stations such as Aviles and Binondo, the volume of garbage collected is 3,356 cubic meters and 357 cubic meters respectively. This paper aims to aid in the alleviation of traffic by designing slab bridges over esteros as parking spaces which may serve as hindrances to the illegal disposal of garbage along the esteros, improving not only the traffic and sanitation conditions but also the aesthetic quality of the area.
This paper presents the results of the Working Stress Design analysis on the design of three (3) slab bridges and the results of a Unit Cost analysis on the cost of constructing those slab bridges which will be used as parking spaces on each of the three (3) esteros: Estero de Aviles, Estero de Binondo and Estero de la Reina. The design computations, including the reinforcements, were based on the moment resisting capacity of the section and only considered a singly-reinforced member. The paper also produces various parking schemes for each type of estero.
Aside from the conventional method of computation used throughout the analysis, the researchers made use of programs such as Microsoft@Excel, GRASP, AutoCad, Google Earth and 3D Max for the presentation of analyses, results, detailing and perspectives. In analyzing the demand for parking in the area, the researchers made use of simple descriptive statistics in the form of a survey.
Based on the results of the survey, there is a demand for parking spaces. Through the analysis and design of the slab bridges to be constructed, the parking spaces available to Estero de Aviles, Estero de Binondo and Estero de la Reina are forty-four (44), twenty-five (25) and thirty-two (32) respectively. The available parking spaces for Estero de Aviles is still subject to further inspection. Given the results of the study, the researchers find however, that to develop slab bridges over esteros for parking is infeasible. Further studies should be made to test other bridge types to ascertain which type is most suitable.
