Abstract/Summary
Lesbians and gays continue to experience discrimination in different social contexts in the Philippines. Even with the emergence of different laws that protects each person against discrimination, there is a lack of a concrete policy that safeguards the rights of members of the LGBT community. This research aims to look at the perception of experiences of discrimination of lesbians and gays in their job application and the coping strategy they employed using the interpretative phenomenological analysis. The researchers conducted a semi-structured interview in order to capture the experiences of informants. After data analysis, four themes emerged from lesbian and gays' discrimination experience--judgment based on expression of sexual orientation, with the subthemes of appearance and length of interview, feeling unwanted, leading to emotional pain, and decrease in self-confidence. For the coping strategy to their experience, five themes were apparent to the researchers and they are: working as a distraction to problems, exploring other opportunities, sharing experiences to other people, letting insults pass away, and working on loving oneself. The findings in this study indicate that equal rights are needed in the job hiring process. Deeper understanding on how discrimination affects the occupational situation and psychological well being of gay men and lesbian individuals is presented for researchers and industrial organizations to consider.
