Abstract/Summary

Laughter is one important aspect when it comes to non-verbal communication. Though laughter is often associated with the feeling of happiness, it may not always be the case laughter may also portray different kinds of emotions. We infer that a variety of other emotions exist during laughter occurrence and therefore investigate this phenomenon. It is the objective of this research to be able to identify the underlying emotions in Filipino laughter.

This research will focus on studying existing techniques on laughter using multimodal approaches in order to derive more suitable solutions. Identifying emotions from paralinguistic signals will allow human-centered design systems to decode the meanings of its users laughter. To the best of our knowledge, no work on automatic construction of a human emotion model in laughter occurrences has been done. Previous studies on laughter detection and emotion recognition had been researched on before but a fusion of these two had never been explored specifically in a local context. Existing systems limits itself to only unimodal approaches (using audio or video only as data). In this study, a multimodal approach will be explored. Aside from this, algorithms from related studies will be applied in order to model and classify human emotions in Filipino laughter.
