Abstract/Summary

In the present time, engaging in social networking sites has become a part of people's lives. This present study examined how extroverts present themselves on social media, specifically to their Facebook friends. Thematic Analysis was the framework used in order to gain an in-depth understanding of the online self-presentation of extroverts and introverts. Eysenck Personality Questionnaire Revised-Short Form (Eysenck, Eysenck & Barrett, 1985) was utilized to know whether respondents presently possess an extroverted or an introverted personality. A set of interview questions were asked to investigate the respondents' n=40) self-presentation among their friends on Facebook. Using the data gathered through interviews and profile checking, the data analysis yielded subcategories for the five categories that emerged in the study. The five categories of online self-presentation are: (1) people-oriented, (2) principled, (3) active person, (4) academically inclined and (5) private person). It was found out that extroverts and introverts both possess the five categories stated, however, the extent of their self-presentation differ from each other. The categories of being people oriented and being principled are more evident in the extroverts that in the introverts. While the categories of being an active person and academically inclined yielded same results for both groups. For the category of being a private person, the results based on the transcripts was different from the results based on the profile checking conducted by the researchers. Supported by previous studies, this development further expands and updates the findings on extraversion and the self-representation of the youth on social media specifically on online platforms, such as Facebook.
