Abstract/Summary

The study seeks to describe the significant experiences and coping strategies of sons whose father is either separated from their mother by distance or martially, specifically in terms of their academic performance, interpersonal relationships, relationships with other members of the family and self-esteem before and after their father left. The participants were selected through a non probability referral sampling and the method in depth interview was conducted. The participants were also asked to answer the Index of Self Esteem. The nature of their school performance, interpersonal relationships, relationships with other family members and self-esteem was first determined so as to be able to formulate a description of their significant experiences and coping strategies. Findings on the nature of experiences and coping strategies showed that their father's absence have had both negative and positive influences in their development. The absence of the father has created handicaps on the part of their sons. In order to meet the demands of each of their experiences, each sons yields to coping strategies. The employment of more than one coping strategy was common to all participants.
