Abstract/Summary
The short feature video FEN LONG tackles the issue regarding the diminishing traditional Chinese culture among the new generation of Chinese in this age of information and globalization, and the widening gap between the traditional Chinese and the modern or new age Filipino-Chinese.
Told in a domestic point of view, the story mainly centers on Feng Long, an old Chinese man who is living in a society that is fast changing and the only way to survive is to go with the changes happening. He owns an ancestral rice business that is already falling apart, physically and financially. Fen Long, also has two children from his deceased wife An Mei. His daughter has also passed away leaving with him his granddaughter Jacklyn to reside with him and his maid/saleslady Inday. His son Brian, on the other hand, has lived independently with his Filipina wife Olivia.
After a long time of absence, Brian pays visit to his aging father who has long considered his son a disgrace after having been married to a non-Chinese woman. Add to this the reluctant character of Brian towards his father's long running business.
Jacklyn, though has lived with his grandfather since her early abandonment, is ironically following the footsteps of his Uncle Brian, too. She is hardly a traditional Chinese in character. In fact, with her ungrateful attitude towards their culture, she's also starting to be a headache to Fen Long.
All these problems has haunted Fen Long for quite some time. However, because of his deeply rooted culture and tradition, as well as a very memorable past, he still believes that he can hold on to the challenges even without conforming to the existing norms.
Unfortunately, fate does not seem to be on his side. Praying to the gods and saints, and seeking comfort from his departed wife also proves futile. All that is left of him is to face the truth and his destiny.
Fen Long is a 31-minute short feature video shot in VHS format using Panasonic VHS Camcorder. It was edited using AVID digital non-linear editing software.
