Abstract/Summary
A series of laboratory test in sand were conducted to investigate the behavior of vertical-spread footings subjected to lateral soil movements, to determine the effect of footing width and depth of embedment on the allowable moment of the foundation and to find an equation that would estimate the allowable moment capacity of the foundation given the depth of embedment and width of the footing. Using the Brom's equation as comparison, it was noted that the trends exhibited by the Brom's equation and the allowable moment derived from the experimental data were quite similar except for the fact that the experimental values were lower by an average of 65%. Considering this fact, the Brom's equation of determining the ultimate soil capacity was divided by a factor of 2.9 based on an average percentage error of 65% and also on the safety factor applied by Brom on his derivation of his equations. The equation mentioned would estimate the allowable moment of a vertical-spread foundation given the width of the footing and the depth of embedment.
