Abstract/Summary
Although tests for chlorine residual is done daily by Surigao Metropolitan Water District (SMWD), there had been no study on the residual distribution and patterns within the entire system under different operational demands. The researchers want to find out the behavior of chlorine concentration and its distribution in the system by using computer simulations. With this, it hopes to identify, analyze and visualize chlorine residual behavior corresponding to charges in flow and pressure, and suggest directions to improve monitoring and assessment.
Results show that different system operations trigger different behaviors of chlorine concentration thus affecting the chlorine residual values. Simulation results generally confirm the field test results for chlorine residual at tapping points under each of three scenarios in different barangays. However, barangays Canlanipa and Cagniog have averages of 0.8 ppm and pass water standards, but in simulations they show low chlorine residuals (less than 0.3ppm) especially under scenarios 2 and 3 were distribution pressures are higher. Barangays Mabua and Sabang appear to show low chlorine residual (less than 0.3ppm) both in field and in simulations and may indicate real under dosage towards these far-ends of Surigao City. Field tests for pressure, flow and chlorine residual are needed to calibrate the model further.
