Abstract/Executive Summary

This qualitative study examined the phenomenon of situationships, which is defined as a romantic involvement that lacks clear commitment, boundaries, and labels. Situationships have surfaced in the context of modern dating culture with the rise of dating apps, in which people may display behaviors typical of couples but are contradictory to their traditional definitions of romantic relationships. This study explored the characteristics that define situationships, how people manage their inherent ambiguity, and why individuals prefer situationships over traditional established relationships. The data was gathered through in-depth interviews with 12 participants and analyzed using inductive thematic analysis of their experiences. The results revealed that open communication and natural development were significant, where participants preferred the flexibility and less pressure that situationships offer as opposed to traditional relationships; for most, this allowed them personal growth and emotional exploration with fewer bounded expectations. The major indicators of situationships include a lack of clear labels, low commitment, and a general sense of uncertainty. Throughout a situationship, individuals often balance personal autonomy and emotional intimacy, maintaining their bond through verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to affirm their feelings and understanding. This study indicated how situationships have similarities with the traditional concept of a relationship, primarily emphasizing mutual respect and open communication. Overall, this research helped provide a clearer understanding of relationships in contemporary society by clarifying the motivations behind individuals’ choices to engage in situationships as an alternative to more conventional forms of relationships and also highlights how individuals navigate the complexities of modern-day relationships.
