Hydnophora aurorae

Hydnophora aurorae

Nemenzo, 1988

Specimen a single column, 12 cm high, 25 mm diameter at base, cylindrical but for short or incipient side branches; tip breaks up into 3 short branches. General surface very rough because of the abundance of monticules.

Most monticules elongated across vertical axis of column, hence, horizontal in position, short (around 6 mm long, 2 mm or less across), crowded. Conical monticules less numerous, 2 mm across at base, 3 mm high, scattered among elongated ones.

Valleys separating monticules 3 mm average width. Those on one side of column (presumably the lower) wider (4 mm wide) so columella more exposed. Calicinal centers mostly indistinguishable.

Septa 10-12 on a conical monticule, 10-12 to a half-cm on elongated ones; of this number, 2-5 are distinctly lower; very narrow at summit of the monticule and become considerably wider as they slope down to the bottom of the valley. Septal surfaces and edges granulose. Interseptal loculi without vesicles so monticules appear thin, not bloated.

Columella discontinuous, featureless, somewhat translucent structure, missing or poorly developed in many places.

Note:
The complete growth form has not been studied. The present species differs from the others under this genus by its very abundant, crowded monticules, mostly short elongated ones, horizontal in position; non-vesiculate.
