Acropora singularis

Acropora singularis

Nemenzo, 1967

Corallum a caespito-arborescent, rounded clump of stout, proliferous branches arising on all sides of a relatively small base; 27 cm across, 14 cm high. Branches at periphery more proliferous than those of center; cylindrical at base, tapering on upper half to an acute apex. Several are arcuate so almost all point upward. Average branch 9 cm high; 15 mm diameter at base, 10 mm at middle, almost 3 mm just below apical corallite. Surface of branches and branchlets roughened throughout length by inequality of radial corallites. Only base relatively smooth because corallites either immersed or flush with surface.

Axial corallites around 3 mm across, 2 mm exsert; wall not very thick, very porous, costulate. Primaries thin but wide, usually reaching about half radius points or beyond, directives only slightly distinguishable; secondaries half as wide or less than primaries.

Radial corallites very crowded, almost eliminating intercalicinal space; of various sizes and height. Up to almost a cm below apex, corallites almost of same height, but below this region down to base of branches and branchlets, they are very unequal. Most prominent ones broadly labellate or spatulate: 2-2.5 mm wide, up to 2 mm high; lower wall rounded, upper wall absent or very slightly developed. Mixed with the prominent corallites are several of various sizes and height, some subimmersed, others with spiniform projections, others small labellate; their walls thicker at base; thinner, delicate, porous around mouth; costulate. Primaries fairly well developed but not reaching radial midpoints; directives slightly distinguishable. Secondaries narrow, may not be complete cycle. Smallest corallites may show only the 2 directives.

Intercalicinal areas when present very porous, delicately reticulate.

Remarks:
The most distinctive feature of this coral is the broadly labellate corallites which stand out very conspicuously among smaller ones of same shape. It resembles A. hebes but for this characteristic and also its very tapering branches.
