Acropora dispar

Acropora dispar

Nemenzo, 1967

Corallum large, irregularly branching. Branches arising in cluster at about same level; arcuate, tapering gradually to blunt apex. Living portion up to 20 cm. main branch 14 mm diameter at base. One side branch 17 cm long, 12 mm diameter at base, 10 mm at middle, 3.5 mm just below axial corallite. Surface very rough because of irregularity of height and position of radials.

Axial corallite cylindrical, 2.5 mm diameter, 2-2.5 mm exsert; wall somewhat thickened but very porous, costate. Septa very thin; 2 directives widen sufficiently at bottom of fossa to converge; secondaries merely tiny projection from calicinal wall, not constituent complete cycle.

Radials of several types not very crowded. Most prominent ones cylindrical, almost erect in some areas, ascending in others especially towards, apices of branchlets; calices lateral or slightly oblique; 2 mm across, 4 mm high. A number of taller, bud-bearing corallites present. Interspersed among prominent corallites are many smaller ones which are tubular, nariform or labellate, lying and directed in all direction, even downward. Wall thin, very prominently costate, very porous, looking like lattice work (lace). Septa poorly developed, except 2 directives. In several corallites, especially young ones, directives only one discernible. Secondaries very occasional.

Intercalicinal areas very spongy, making coral light; reticulation very conspicuous with thread continuous with costae on calicinal wall.

Remarks:
The various positions and sizes of the radial corallites make this coral distinct.
