Abstract/Executive Summary
Amid the growing reliance on artificial intelligence for academic support, this study examines how Filipino Gen Z perceive human and AI-generated advice through the lens of Sikolohiyang Pilipino, particularly pakikipagpalagayang-loob. While advice-seeking in the Philippines is traditionally rooted in relational trust, empathy, and shared understanding, the rise of AI introduces alternative, non-human spaces for guidance. This research employs a qualitative design using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) to explore the lived experiences of ten Filipino Gen Z participants who have sought academic advice from both their friends and ChatGPT. Data were collected through Pagtatanong-tanong, which allowed for culturally grounded and conversational inquiry. Findings suggest that although AI-generated advice is often perceived as accessible, immediate, and nonjudgmental, human-generated advice remains more meaningful due to its capacity to embody emotional sincerity, mutual trust, and relational depth. Participants associated stronger experiences of pakikipagpalagayang-loob with human interactions, while AI was seen as limited in achieving genuine emotional connection despite its ability to simulate empathy. These differences highlight the importance of relational context in shaping perceived helpfulness and the sincerity of advice. The study concludes that while AI can supplement advice-seeking practices, it cannot fully replicate the culturally embedded relational dynamics central to Filipino psychological experience. This research contributes to expanding Sikolohiyang Pilipino into digital contexts and informs discussions on the ethical and cultural implications of AI-mediated emotional support.
