Abstract/Executive Summary

Mukbang, a digital trend in which creators film themselves eating large amounts of food, continues to influence online food culture. Although generally regarded as entertainment, exaggerated eating has been a concern that may affect creators’ eating behaviors. With existing research primarily focused on viewers, the experiences of creators and their associated health risks remain understudied. This gap is particularly notable in the Philippines, where excessive social media usage not only increases the visibility of mukbang content but also creates demands for creators. A qualitative phenomenological design was utilized, and semi-structured interviews were conducted via Zoom with eight (8) purposively sampled Filipino mukbang creators from TikTok, each with a minimum of 8,000 followers. To identify recurring patterns and experiences related to motivations, eating behaviors, and awareness of health impacts, Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis was used. Factors such as viewer engagement, financial benefits, and the pressure to maintain online presence were revealed to be factors that shape the overall process of mukbang content creation. Participants reported the experience of irregular eating patterns, performative eating behaviors, emotional exhaustion, and the gradual association of food with productivity and audience expectations. Future research may focus on the examination of long-term physical, psychological, and behavioral effects of mukbang content creation on creators through larger, diverse sample groups across different platforms. Additionally, gender differences, platform algorithms, and the influence of audience perceptions may also be investigated in relation to the creators’ eating behaviors.
