The Arts and Design Research Presentations event is a platform for emerging artist-researchers whose research and/or creative works are interpretative, explorative, interdisciplinary, or critical. These works must respond to the congress theme through innovation, provocation, or mediation. This event is open for senior high school artist-researchers engaged in the visual arts, design and applied arts, digital arts, film, creative writing, performing arts, music, dance, and community-based artistic projects.Master Class
The Master Class encourages mentors and scholars across countries to apply, collaborate, and integrate into the pursuit of sustainable actions through research.- The 6th DLSU SHS Research Congress on June 11 & 13, 2024, is exclusive to Grade 11 and 12 senior high school students of Academic Year 2023–2024 from schools all over the world.
- Registration for the Congress is done per school, with a minimum of one (1) student and one (1) faculty. A maximum of 50 registrants per school (already inclusive of the number of teachers and students) is allowed to register for the Congress.
- Since the Congress will be conducted through an online platform, there shall be no registration fees to be collected from the participants.
- All interested schools must accomplish the School Registration Form.
- Registration starts on March 15, 2024 and ends on May 31, 2024.
- After accomplishing the form, a confirmation email from the Communications Committee will be sent to the school along with the official registration sheet. ONLY those whose names appear in the official registration sheet shall be considered as Registered Participants. The confirmation email also includes the invitation to the Congress Events.
- The following shall be provided by the organizers to the confirmed participants: Book of Abstracts, Certificate of Participation, Congress Proceedings, and use of DLSU Congress virtual facilities.
- To protect the privacy and security of Congress participants during the virtual events, no on-the-spot registration will be accommodated.

- The Congress invites presenters to the following events: 1) Paper Presentation, 2) Poster Presentation, 3) Business Presentation, and 4) Arts and Design Research Presentation.
- As mentioned in the Registration Guidelines (page 4), a maximum of 50 faculty and students per school is allowed to register for the Congress. Please note that only registered participants are eligible to submit their entries. In addition, each registered school may ONLY submit a maximum of 20 manuscripts for all Congress events. 1.

- There will be a blind selection process for all submitted Presentation Papers, Poster Papers, Business Plans and Research, and Arts and Design Research. However, the 5th DLSU SHS Research Congress Committee reserves the right to exclude submitted manuscripts from review on the grounds of non-compliance with the Congress’ format, scope, and guidelines.

4. Interested participants MUST submit their original work and declare authenticity. This event also allows works that have been presented in other conferences, exhibited in galleries or art spaces, screened in film festivals, or performed in theaters and stages.
5. ONLY finished and complete manuscript and artworks will be accepted. In addition, the artistic work should not contain pornographic, obscene, extremely violent, unnecessarily provocative content (images, audio, video or text) nor messages that promote hate towards a particular race, ethnicity, physical quality, gender, religious belief nor social class.
6. The panel reviewers will evaluate the submissions based on the following: research content, process, writing, craftsmanship, concept/ creative direction, aesthetic impact, and appropriateness to be presented in a research forum and public exhibition. The panel reviewers reserve the right to reject or accept art research and creative works. Some accepted works may be given instructions for further revision and improvement. This is to streamline the works with the curatorial directive of this Congress event..

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Dr. Ethel C. Ong
Dr. Ethel C. Ong envisions enhancing man-machine interactions through Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) for the betterment of human society. Hailing from De La Salle University’s Center for Language Technologies, she develops automated story generation systems and narrative-based conversational interfaces, believing that computers can better communicate with and understand the needs of their human users by listening to and sharing stories. Her work has encompassed using conversational storytelling agents or chatbots for mental health awareness, cybersafety, socio-emotional development, and learning. Currently the Dean of the College of Computer Studies and previously the Director for the Senior High School Engagement Program at De La Salle University - Manila, she regularly conducts capacity training for students, educators, and researchers on topics that include designing the research curriculum, research ethics, publishing papers, and computational storytelling.
Accountancy and Business Management
Dr. Patrick Adriel H. Aure is an associate professor at the Department of Management and Organization, Ramon V. del Rosario College of Business, De La Salle University. He concurrently serves as the Director of the PHINMA-DLSU Center for Business and Society and as the Assistant Dean for Quality Assurance of RVRCOB. At the same university, he finished his Ph.D. in Business with a dissertation that explained the viability of social entrepreneurship support and incubation units within higher education through a critical realist philosophy of science. He teaches management principles, research methods, and action research in the undergraduate program while advocating for integral human development, qualitative research, authentic use of generative AI, and proper interpretation of statistics in management education. He has published journal articles, teaching cases, and opinion columns primarily on social enterprise business models, social entrepreneurial intentions, social enterprise incubation, sustainability, innovation, and management education. He has received recognition and awards for his accomplishments as a faculty and a researcher in the field. In 2022, he was elected as the President of the Philippine Academy of Management, where he advocated for the development of the country's business research competencies and the responsible use of AI.
Mr. Edward D. Cabagnot
Arts and Design Track
Mr. Edward Delos Santos Cabagnot’s career in cinema and the academe spans over three and a half decades. Currently, he teaches film-related courses at the University of the Philippines, De La Salle University, and De La Salle - College of Saint Benilde, with a special teaching focus on Contemporary Southeast Asian Cinema, Film Festival Management, and Philosophy and Pinoy Cinema. He served at the Cultural Center of the Philippines as the Director of the CCP Media (Film, Broadcast & New Media) Arts Division. He was a founding member of the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival. He managed Asia's longest-running indie film and video competition, the Gawad CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video (CCP Independent Film & Video Competition). From the mid-70s, he has continued to write columns and articles for local and international publications. In 2007, he was awarded an Asian Public Intellectuals Fellowship Grant by the Nippon Foundation for his research, “Changing Landscapes, Changing Lives: The Changing Cinemas of Asia.” His works, “Film Noir” and "Heidegger's Being and Time & Manuel Silos' Biyaya Ng Lupa” were published in Ateneo de Manila University’s Budhi philosophy journal and by the UP Press, respectively. His latest course, “Introduction to AI Technology,” aims to give a holistic understanding of Artificial Intelligence and its relationship to the Human Experience, especially in Media, Technology, and Society. It does this from diverse vantage points: its philosophical origins, the ethical challenges surrounding it, and its creative possibilities.
Dr. Fides A. Del Castillo
Humanities and Social Sciences
Dr. Fides A. del Castillo graduated from Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle University, and Fordham University and took courses in Asian Theology, Gender, and Biblical Feminism at Roehampton University and Leadership, Communication, and Culture at Warwick University, London. Currently, she is an Associate Professor at De La Salle University. She teaches theology, spirituality, religious education, and research courses. She has held various administrative positions, such as department Chair of the Theology and Religious Department and Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts. She is the Associate Dean of the School of Innovation and Sustainability at De La Salle University-Laguna. She is a Lamin Sanneh Research Grant 2022-2024 Awardee of the OMSC, Princeton Theological Seminary, USA. She was a visiting scholar at Fuller Theological Seminary, USA, and KU Leuven, Belgium. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the International Association for Mission Studies and the President of the Network of Professional Researchers and Educators. She developed the Laylayan Theology in 2022, which theologizes a Filipino cultural concept that has been appropriated that privileges and brings to the fore the voices of the people from the margins. She is a journal guest editor of the 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines: Impact on Asia and the World and The Role of Religion and Spirituality in Times of Crisis at Religions Journal (91st Percentile Scopus). Her latest edited books are the Flourishing Faith: 500 Years of Christianity in the Philippines and Basic Ecclesial Communities Historical Manuscript. Her research interest is Laylayan Theology, World Christianity, Religion, and Spirituality.
Dr. Jonathan Y. Cagas
Sports Track
Dr. Jonathan Y. Cagas is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sports Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman. He also serves as the Director of the Graduate Studies Program and Research Office of the UP Diliman College of Human Kinetics. His research primarily focuses on understanding the psychological and social factors influencing participation and non-participation in yoga and other forms of physical activity. In 2022, Jonathan led the development of the first Philippine Report Card on Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors in Children and Adolescents. Developed as part of the Active Healthy Kids Global Alliance Global Matrix 4.0 project, this report emphasized the need to create more opportunities for physical activity among Filipino youth and research that could influence physical activity program development, implementation, and policy in the Philippines.
Dr. Aristotle T. Ubando
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics
Dr. Aristotle T. Ubando is the Assistant Dean for Research and Advanced Studies at the Gokongwei College of Engineering at De La Salle University. He is a Full Professor and Research Fellow at the Mechanical Engineering Department at the same University. He is the head of the Thermomechanical Analysis Laboratory at De La Salle University – Laguna Campus. He has published more than 180 Scopus-indexed journal papers at the national and international levels with an h-index of 27. Prof. Ubando was listed among the top 2% of the world’s researchers based on composite metrics by Stanford University and Elsevier statisticians in 2021 and 2022. He is selected as one of the 2017 Asian Scientists 100 for his contribution to the sustainability field. He is a multi-awarded scientist in the Philippines, among his national awards, is the Outstanding Young Scientist in 2016 bestowed by the National Academy of Science and Technology. He is a recipient of the Achievement Award 2020 for his contribution to the Engineering Division of the National Research Council of the Philippines. His research includes finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, process integration and optimization, and energy system modeling.
She is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Technology at De La Salle University. She is also a member of the Bioinformatics Laboratory, the Center for Automation Research, and the Andrew L. Tan Data Science Institute at the university. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Notre Dame, USA, in May 2022 under the Fulbright Scholarship. She received her MS degree in Electrical Engineering under the Engineering Research and Development (ERDT) Scholarship of the Philippine Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and a BS degree in Computer Engineering from the University of the Philippines – Diliman, 2012. She has published and reviewed in top conferences and journals, including Nature Communications and Nature Electronics. She is currently the managing editor of ACM Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems (TODAES).
Dr. Thomas James Tiam-Lee
Dr. Thomas James Tiam-Lee is a research fellow at the Andrew L. Tan Data Science Institute. He received his Ph.D. in Future University Hakodate in Hokkaido, Japan under a scholarship from the Japanese government. His dissertation is on the computational modeling of students’ emotional states while learning programming. He has received several recognitions for his research work, including the best full research paper at the 14th International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems. Currently, he is an assistant professor at De La Salle University’s College of Computer Studies, where he focuses on artificial intelligence, computational social science, data science, and its applications to various fields and disciplines.
