Abstract/Executive Summary
Bicycles have become increasingly popular in the Philippines due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic. The government has seen the rapid increase of cyclists and created a bike lane project, only to cause more trouble to cyclists. Cyclists experienced difficulties varying from road obstructions, inconsistent lanes, and parked vehicles to misaligned barriers. There was also an evident increase in road-related accidents in the country. With this, Grade 12 Arts and Design students of De La Salle University - Manila conducted a study to design a compelling, accessible, and safe bike lane to improve cyclists' experience and promote bicycle use as a mode of transportation. To provide more knowledge and credibility, the researchers have conducted a comprehensive literature review discussing topics from the rise of cyclists and related road accidents during the pandemic, the benefits and issues of cycling, and the principles of a safe bike lane design. Additionally, they have conducted an online survey among 20 cyclists to gather their opinions on possible design changes to the bike lanes. The survey showed that most cyclists had a bad experience using the bike lane because of vehicles entering or pedestrians walking on it. If possible design changes were to be made, they prefer the bike lane to be separated from other vehicles and protected by a barrier. This project also included the creation of a floor plan, side and front elevations, a perspective drawing, and a scaled model, which were created through Traditional Drawing, SketchUp, and various materials.
