Abstract

This chapter introduces a different perspective on how to address inclusive growth. Poverty persists because living and working conditions do not create enough livelihood opportunities in marginal farms and fishing areas around the country. To unshackle the poor from the fabric of persistent poverty, it is essential that proposed initiatives take a holistic approach so that outcomes are sustained. This chapter shows how systems approaches were used by three private entities in the Philippines to help three marginalized communities take responsibility for their development. By becoming self-dependent, the community members have developed pride in themselves and in their capacity to overcome poverty. © 2016 Taylor & Francis.
