Abstract
The global energy demand is continuously rising as the result of growing industrial activities across the world. While the world transitions to greener alternatives to meet the increasing energy needs, petroleum products remain a ubiquitous source of energy for all applications imaginable due to its portability and high energy density. In effect, oil & gas refineries and downstream processes such as petrochemicals will continue to operate for many years to come, and efficient and reliable operation of these facilities is desirable as global industries aim towards carbon neutrality by the year 2050. The use of online process gas chromatographs (PGC) has allowed oil & gas refineries and chemical processing plants to automate the control of critical parameters to ensure that desired product grades are achieved and maintained. Proper design of these systems helps ensure that oil refineries and petrochemical plants are operating at their peak. System Engineering approaches provide a basis for the design of the process analytical equipment.
