Abstract

This study explored the skills and experiences of Filipino school counselors in research. Thirty Filipino school counselors were interviewed on their research skills and their use in school counseling practice. Results of the thematic analysis showed that counselors are skilled in collecting data, planning out research activities, and writing reports. These skills which they gained from formal education and enhanced at work were utilized in research and school counseling activities, specifically in case management and program development. Their research engagement was motivated by their determination to provide better school counseling services and the importance that employers place on research. For school counselors, research can facilitate professional development, increase school counseling service efficacy, and generate personal achievement, but also requires time and financial resources. Skills in collecting and analyzing data, as well as in writing research reports were identified as requisites for school counselors to be more competent in research. Recommendations for Filipino school counselors, professional accrediting agencies, counselor educators, and employers are discussed.
