Abstract/Summary

The current study aimed to investigate the psychological help-seeking behavior among Filipino middle-aged adults. 413 Filipino middle-aged adults who were currently employed and living in Metro Manila participated in the study. Participants were asked to answer the online survey which consisted of Mental Health Literacy Scale, Theory of Planned Behavior Measure, and Self-Reported Psychological Help-Seeking Behavior. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) was utilized to determine and measure the extent of the predictive relationships and associations among mental health literacy, attitude, subjective norm, perceived behavioral control, and intention on psychological help-seeking behavior. Results showed that mental health literacy was a positive predictor of attitude (b = 0.74, SE = 0.09, p b =0.74, SE = 0.15, p b = .95, SE = 0.12, p b = 0.58, SE = 0.08, p b = 0.16, SE = 0.05, p b = .12, SE = .07, p = .08), significantly predicted the intention to seek help. Finally, help-seeking intention was found to positively predict help-seeking behavior (b = 0.04, SE = 0.01, p p < .01) and perceived behavioral control and intention (p < .01). The predictive correlational study highlighted that individuals with greater knowledge about mental health and illness are associated with positive help-seeking attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control. Moreover, having a positive attitude and a greater perceived behavioral control is associated with help-seeking intention, which significantly predicts subsequent help-seeking behavior. Implications and recommendations for mental health professionals were discussed.
