Abstract/Summary
The phenomenon of Sugar Dating has been extremely rampant in today’s society and has flourished due to the ongoing pandemic that has caused numerous people to lose their jobs and main source/s of income. With this, people who are in desperate financial situations have a high tendency to lean on unconventional ways of earning or making ends meet.
Sugar & Old Spice is a three-part episode audio documentary, that reveals the realities, and highlights the risks & dangers of Sugar Dating. The audio documentary goes to show the endangerment of getting into such relationships aka, “arrangements” for quick fixes on the current struggles of certain individuals. The participants are two former Sugar Babies who shares their real-life experiences, along with two professionals; a sociologist and a psychologist to give us in-depth insights on as to why and how this specific phenomenon operates. Additionally, they all reside within Metro Manila.
To adhere to the university protocols, the proponents utilized the conferencing app, Zoom to facilitate all interviews. It is with this that we were able to conduct the interviews in a ‘safe’ manner in lieu of the background of the interviewees, as they were given the choice and discretion to keep their cameras turned off for privacy and security. Through the Zoom platform, we were also able to extract good audio quality given the nature of our project.
Moreover, this specific medium of an audio documentary allows the listeners to vividly use their imagination to understand and internalize the risks and dangers of getting into ‘Sugar Dating’. Additionally, due to the nature of the medium, the participants’ (specifically, the Sugar Babies) identities are protected and kept confidential. Concerning the preparation of the production, the proponents have prepared all the necessary files and documents from script to audio files, and consent forms to made Sugar & Old Spice possible. Preparation for the Sugar & Old Spice audio documentary began on October 18, 2021, and formally ended on January 23, 2022. MP3 format.
