Abstract/Summary

“You, Us” is a 12-minute live-action short feature directed, written, and produced by Angelica Espiritu and Louie Lorenzo. The story revolves around two lifelong friends: Khalil, an aspiring writer, and Joy, an aspiring videographer. The narrative goes through the years of their friendship, from when they first met as school children, to their life together as housemates, to being an inseparable pair of best friends who stuck together throughout the course of their lives. Khalil struggles with a story that he is writing, with which Joy also tries to help him. When Joy suddenly passes away due to a life-threatening condition, Khalil’s world crumbles, as she was always the ray of sunshine in their friendship. As Khalil struggles to cope and process his emotions, he receives a surprise message from Joy. Because of their closeness and familiarity with each other, Joy foresees that Khalil will lose himself in his grief and prepares a final message for him, scheduled to be sent after her inevitable passing. Only after going through Joy’s message does Khalil realize that all he needs is a personal touch, which he pulls from his and Joy’s journey through life.

The film mainly explores the concept of grief after the loss of a friend. It also explores the complexities of friendships, and hopes to challenge preconceived notions of what friendship should look like, especially those between persons of opposite sex.
