Abstract/Summary
PLHIV. is a visually appealing webzine that aims to de-stigmatize the concept of HIV and People Living with HIV (PLHIV) in the Philippines, specifically targeting the youth. By showcasing local stories, animated art, and interactive visuals, PLHIV. combats misconceptions surrounding HIV. The webzine employs conversational English-Tagalog to offer personal perspectives on living with HIV, dispelling common misconceptions.
The Philippines is facing a rapidly growing HIV epidemic, with a 237% increase in infection rates between 2010 and 2020 and the under discussion of HIV due to conservative cultural norms and the taboo nature of discussing sex further contributes to stigmatization. With this, drawing inspiration from the historical significance of zines as tools for spreading awareness among youth, PLHIV. seeks to inspire resistance movements by sharing localized stories of PLHIV.
The webzine features different stories ranging from people living with HIV, traditional people’s perspective regarding HIV, HIV literacy of some members of the LGBTQ+ community and experiences, and a lot more information revolving around HIV information. Visual elements also play a pivotal role, with animated art and interactive features providing an engaging user experience. As the first online English-Tagalog zine dedicated to HIV, PLHIV. provides a localized and relatable platform catered to Filipinos while contributing de-stigmatization efforts and raises HIV awareness in the country, ultimately combating misconceptions and promoting empathy towards PLHIV.
