Abstract/Summary
The Northern Samar Provincial Tourism Office (NSPTO) is a government unit that regulates and oversees programs under the Samar Island Natural Park Protected Area. One of its protected areas is Biri Landscape and Seascape Protected Area, where the famous Biri Rock Formation is located. Orientations, done verbally, are conducted before proceeding with the tour, which aims to disseminate knowledge about policies, guidelines, and environmental conservation. Conducting orientations through purely verbal demonstrates that the organization lacks the use of supplementary materials for tourists’ ease of access and better understanding. The lack of supplementary materials leads to tourists’ deviation from rules and less retention of information. The identified organizational communication issue is the inefficient transfer of knowledge through the chosen communication strategies of NSPTO’s orientation program about policies and guidelines to tourists when visiting Biri. In relation to the Knowledge Transfer Model (KTM) (Liyanage et al., 2009), a qualitative research method through semi-structured interviews was utilized to gather data for the source and receiver audits, and document analysis for the message audit, and are all analyzed through thematic analysis. The audit results revealed that the knowledge transfer process of NSPTO for its visitors through its orientation program is inadequate and inefficient as it lacks requirements to fulfill the first few steps of the KTM, which consequently affects the following steps. Moreover, characterizing the transfer of explicit knowledge in the context of NSPTO, it is lacking due to the unavailability of manual and visual aids. Tacit knowledge will not be easily interpreted since tacit and explicit knowledge depends on each other. The researchers formulated an orientation manual, tarpaulin, and brochure based on the KTM and Design Framework of Moys (2017). The orientation manual contains appropriate information for tour guides to adhere to during the orientation, and the tarpaulin and brochure contain guidelines to serve as supplementary materials for tourists. The materials produced were deemed as effective means of knowledge transfer and efficiently provided knowledge for both the tour guides and the tourists during the orientation and tour. The produced materials benefitted the organization and its constituents as they have foundational documents as a standard protocol to execute a more systematic and efficient orientation and tour process.
