Abstract/Summary

The Year Of is a comedy-drama short feature film focusing on how grief is dealt with differently, particularly through the eyes of a child. It follows the year in the life of 6-year-old Nate, who records the exciting new changes in his life for his father who died recently. The film is a light take on grief, highlighting the innocence and optimism of children and the influence it has on viewing life.

The death of a significant person, a topic that is heavily centered around elements of loss and hopelessness, is usually met with gray emotions. However, death can also be tackled in a healthier manner with loved ones remembering and honoring the deceased, rather than avoiding any memories or triggers about them (University of Washington, n.d.). Now, as children are usually associated with having less knowledge and understanding of how the world works, their viewpoints towards death and loss are more simplified and more often influenced by how cartoons depict the topics on screen.

Playing with this idea, the film showcases the contrast of grieving between the young son and the mother. As adults have more experience with life itself, their formed practical way of thinking results in having a more visible projection of grief. It is also more difficult for them to bounce back as grief can be an overwhelming emotion for them to go through. Hence, grief can be healthy, optimistic, and thriving. Thus, The Year Of aims to teach adults to adopt the resilient trait children have not just in grieving but in all aspects of life.
