Abstract/Summary

Drawing from real-life experiences of generational trauma, Patronym is a narrative fictional short film that presents experiences and struggles of generational trauma. It follows Thirdy Garcia, a first-year pre-med college student born into a well-off family. The pressure to become a doctor comes from his self-made father and neurosurgeon, Benjamin Garcia Jr., and has been something he has carried all his life. Upon entering university, Thirdy is presented with a striking new option to serve the general public as a doctor. He comes into numerous confrontations with his father regarding his decision for his career. However, Benjamin, who lifted himself from poverty, believes that to be a doctor for the masses is to choose to live a life of struggle, fearing that Thirdy might experience what he went through growing up.

The film tackles the phenomenon of generational trauma experienced by an upper-middle-class member. This is guided by the pressure to succeed in one’s career, coupled with a parent’s fear of ensuring financial stability and security for their children after having gone through their own financial struggles, which would come with its own set of effects. These effects manifest in a multitude of ways. However, the proponents have narrowed the scope to how these pressures being passed down results in a significant weight towards an individual’s sense of autonomy towards their life decisions, as well as a strain in personal relationships.

The proponents recognize that although the scope of the narrative is towards the experience of the upper-middle class, the stresses caused by the trauma of poverty, the fear of retaining financial security and social status, and the weighted pressure of conformity due to societal and familial standards are presented. This is done through a character experiencing generational trauma from a family who has liberated themselves from poverty.

The film is provided in 1080p, .mov format.
