Abstract/Summary

Sumayaw Sumunod is a short dance film that taps into the struggles and harsh realities of a 22-year-old Filipino daughter who is trying to pursue dance as a career. It follows the story of Ate, who had always considered dance as a big part of her life. However, being a part of a lower-middle-class family, pursuing dance as a career was not entirely ideal. Her pursuit and commitment are tested when her family faces financial problems, igniting more conflict within the family. This forces Ate to leave her passion for dance aside and shift her path toward the corporate world.

The running time of this film is sixteen (16) minutes long and highlights the ability of dance and movement to convey the story without the primary use of dialogue. This film tackles the notion of artists being unable to make a living out of their work, the stereotypical saying of “walang pera sa sining.” This also stems from the difficulty of life in the Philippines and how hundreds of Filipinos’ dreams are compromised due to the living situations in our country. However, it also wishes to send a message of resilience, especially for artists of all forms, wherein no matter how aggressive life becomes, it is important to trace back to what you truly want for yourself.
