Abstract/Summary

The study identified the stressors and their perceived impact on the performance of Indonesian doctors. Moreover, it assessed if there existed a relationship between level of stress and performance. The study employed Indonesian doctors who underwent training in the Philippines, pursuing medical training in specialization that required history taking skills and emergency room duties. The specialized fields were Obstetrics-Gynecology, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics and Anesthesiology. The total sample consisted of 103 participants, both male and female, with ages ranging from 25 to 40 years old. A purposive type of sampling was used. The study utilized both qualitative and quantitative approaches for data analysis by using a structured interview and a questionnaire. Perceived impact of the stress to the participants found were (1) physical, (2) mental; (3) psychological and emotional; and (4) social. Cultural stressors found in the study involved the stress caused by cultural adjustment and language barrier. Physical environment included the issues on cleanliness, space allotment, crowding, incompleteness of facilities, and distance from work to home. Financial stressors included higher living cost and feeling guilty because of the burden given to the family. Marital stressors found were the need for involvement with the family and need for emotional support. Lastly, there existed no significant relationship between stress and performance in this study.
