Abstract/Summary

Recent globalization trends highlight the reality of migration movements where workers leave their countries of origin for the promise of better wages in regions of higher productivity. Governments of sending countries welcome this respite because of the apparent opportunity to earn foreign exchange for the national economy and a prompt response for the clamor for employment of a highly qualified workforce. In the Philippines, contract labor migration has increased steadily in the last two decades. The active intervention of the Philippine government played a significant role in this migratory behavior. Because of its exponential growth and alerted public started pressuring the government to prioritize the problems of migrant workers. As a result, Philippines has the most development legal policies on labor migration in Asia. This thesis seeks to determine how the labor migration in the country developed and led to the birth of overseas recruitment agencies. Moreover, it seeks to study the business of overseas placement and recruitment and the effects of government regulations imposed on them, focusing on their profitability. If found necessary, the researcher will propose changes in the current regulatory framework to increase the fruits of their production.
