Abstract/Summary

This project paper describes five hundred hours of internship in a water utility company. The purpose of the internship is to help improve the industrial control system (ICS), and on the process, better understand the application of automation in an industrial plant.

The researcher applied for an intern position in the company's Automation and Instrumentation (A&I) Department under the Information Technology (IT) Services Division. She worked with the A&I team to understand the entire process in a water utility plant. While working with the team, the researcher learned about the different pieces of equipment and instruments in the plant, as well as their maintenance and calibration.

One of the internships main goals is the creation and design of a graphical user interface (GUI) for different plants using the PI System of OSIsoft. The GUI will be used allow the company's corporate network to access data from different plants in real time. The researcher created tags to connect the plants to the corporate network. The GUI, with the help of the tags, will speed up numerous business processes and improve turnaround time, especially for analysis and maintenance.
