Abstract/Summary

The conduct of catechesis in basic education government schools has faced a number of perennial challenge. These include the lack of catechists, unavailability of learning materials, limited time in teaching, and missing catechetical program. The present study is conducted to know the state of catechesis in Vicariate 7 of the Archdioces of Lipa and propose a unified catechetical program for basic education public schools under the vicariate. To achieve this purpose, this researcher assessed the students’ extent of catechetical knowledge on Catholic doctrine, and it inquired about the effectiveness of catechetical methodlogy employed by the catechists of the vicariate. The respondents included 388 students from 16 public national high schools.

To gather the necessary data, this researcher employed quantitative and qualitative methods using a self-made questionnaire, which underwent corrections and validations by the mentor, four subject matter experts and one instrument expert. The questionnaire is composed of three parts: Part I contains the profile of the respondents; Part II comprises the items on Catholic doctrines (Revelation and Faith, Jesus and Discipleship, Morality/Moral Life, Church and Sacraments, and Mary, Mother of Jesus) based on the Catechism for the Filipino Catholics (CFC, 1997); and Part III includes the items on Catechetical Methodology (Integrated, Inculturation, and community-forming) based on the three basic catechetical principles (NCDP, 2007). It also has a space for the respondents’ opinion for each statement. Considering the context of public national high schools, this researcher opted to use the Filipino langauage as the medium to articulate the questionnaire items more clearly. Moreover, the researcher also conducted several focus group discussions in four schools within the research environment to further validate qualitatively the answers of the respondents.

Generally, the results revealed that students have significant, above-average scores in terms of Catholic Doctrines. However, upon further validations through focus group discussions, some discrepancies within the results were observed. There are several topics in Catholic Doctrine that students still need to know, clarify, and understand better. On the other hand, the students assessed the effectiveness of Catechetical Methodoloy to be moderately effective. However, students’ opinion revealed that some of the enumerated methodologies were not practiced nor applied in their class by the catechists. The results of the study also showed that the students lack spiritual activities for their spiritual formation.

In terms of the respondents’ profile, the results showed that there were no significant differences on the students’ knowledge on Catholic Doctrines, except when the responses were grouped by school. Meanwhile, there was a significant relationship between the students’ knowledge on Catholic Doctrines and the effectiveness of Catechetical Mehtodology employed by the catechists.

The results of the study were used by this research as basis for proposing a unified catechetical program written in Filipino for Vicariate 7 public schools. The proposed program can be found in Chapter IV.
