Abstract/Summary
This study aims to describe the commonly perceived lies in the work setting, the factors that influence the propensity of an individual to lie, the perceived positive and negative effects of lying and the responses to these effects at the individual and organizational level. A survey was conducted using an interview schedule done through face-to-face interview. The selection of the respondents was done through a non-probability sampling method using chain-referral. The respondents were employees who have been working for the advertising industry for at least six (6) months. Also, a pre-test was done on employees working in different industries and students to check the validity of the instrument. Findings show that perceptions of respondents vary in terms of the focus of their definitions. Their perceptions include the manner, intent, severity and content of lie. All in all, they point out at the fact that Filipinos stress the value of how a statement is said rather than what is uttered. Moreover, the individual and organizational factors reveal that both factors interact and account for the instances of lie-telling. The positive and negative effects that they encounter consist of the intrinsic and extrinsic rewards and the effect on their relationship with the people and the system of the organization. The responses to these effects are either formal or informal sanctions both in the individual and organizational level.
