Abstract
As an answer to the clamor for green space while easing into the “new normal”, the University of the Philippines (n.d.) became more known to the public as “one of the remaining patches of greenery in the concrete jungle that is Metro Manila” they can visit. Using ubiquitous technology in human-nature interactions (Terzimehić, etal., 2021), Tunograpiya facilitates creative placemaking (Wyckoff, 2014) through an immersive experience of the University of the Philippines academic oval’s sonic ecology. The result of the project is a beta web application that lets the user experience a unique sonic environment of layers of sonic material from and in tagged geofenced points around the U.P. Academic Oval. On February 22, 2026, the beta version of the web application was launched as a part of the U.P. Diliman Arts and Culture Festival events through a soundwalk around the U.P. Academic Oval. Members of the Tunograpiya team composed of student members of the UP Junior Music Educators’ Guild, members of the Philippine Native Plants Conservation Society, Inc. (PNPCSI), musicians, visual artists, green architecture advocates, and technology experts, shared their experiences starting from the conceptualization, treewalk for ecological grounding, and the experience of the application launch. Results show that site-specific projects that shift the focus of the experience to sonic ecology highlight the following themes on creative placemaking: discussions as result of attention to various stimuli, reframing of sensory experience, augmented vis a vis confirmed realities, and technical difficulties for future possibilities. As deduced from the discussions after the soundwalk, the activation of the space added a layer of vitality to the U.P. Academic Oval, becoming a common point of interest for people of diverse backgrounds to listen to.
