Montipora contorta

Montipora contorta

Nemenzo & Montecillo, 1981

Colony consists of creeping, explanate base producing almost erect outgrowths. Stems tend to produce palmation from which several terminal branchlets arise. Longest diameter of base 10 cm; free edge around 3 mm thick, somewhat well-rounded, irregularly cut, with a number of incipient outgrowths: lower surface without epitheca, almost smooth (free from contortions): corallites smaller than those on upper surface; perithecal spines even in height and distribution. Upper surface, including outgrowths much wrinkled (contorted) due to presence of short or long ridges (ramparts) enclosing distinct valleys containing one or more calicinal centers. On terminal branchlets, valleys generally longitudinal, cut into segments by low cross ridges.

Corallites confirmed within valleys, either singly or in rows of 2 or more, but separated by narrow shelf from surrounding rampart. Calice slightly less than 1 mm across.

Primary septa thick, prominent, about as thick as intervening loculi, slightly short of calicinal center, their inner portion elevated above level of calicinal rim, thus making them prominent: surface very finely, sparingly granulous; directives only slightly distinguishable in few calices, not in most. Secondaries incompletely cycle – only 1 to 3 present: narrow, thin.

Perithecal areas raised into narrow ridges with acute summits, almost 1 mm high. Perithecal reticulum not obvious except in younger regions. Perithecal spines of uniform height, their tips evenly trimmed.

Remarks:
At first sight, this species resembles and may be mistaken for a Porites of the subgenus Napopora like the specimens of Hoffmeister (1925). It is one of the few ramose papillate Montipora whose papillae are joined to form elongated ridges.
