Abstract/Executive Summary
Abstract: Road traffic injuries are one of the alarming yet neglected public health issues in the Philippines. Traffic control signs are often installed in conspicuous locations, but their effectiveness can be assessed by how the public understands them. This study investigated the road signage knowledge of Grade 6 students in a public elementary school in Calamba City, Laguna. Data were gathered through a researcher-made 14-item survey and individual semi-structured interviews. Results indicate that the students are generally knowledgeable about common road signage, except for school-related road signs. Inclusion of road safety signs lessons in the classroom was limited, and teachers generally showed a lack of mastery of the topic. Based on these findings, this study proposes conducting road safety orientations for students and teachers, disseminating road safety infographics in the area to increase awareness, and improving the visibility of the existing school zone signage. To achieve these goals, the school may consider strengthening its partnership with the Local Government Unit (LGU) and other stakeholders. Furthermore, cooperation with barangay officials is recommended to assist students, especially during morning arrivals and dismissal times. Finally, gamifying lessons on road safety can be explored as a teaching strategy, as indicated in the students’ responses.
