Abstract/Executive Summary

This study investigates the effectiveness of coping strategies among senior high school students at De La Salle University Manila, focusing on how these strategies affect their well-being. Utilizing a qualitative methodology, the research selects a diverse sample of 8-12 participants by purposive sampling to capture a wide range of experiences and insights about students' coping behaviors. Semi-structured interviews were conducted during the second term of the Academic Year 2023-2024 to ensure rigorous ethical standards, such as informed consent and confidentiality. The thematic analysis, propelled by Lazarus and Folkman's Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, allowed for a thorough assessment of the data, highlighting numerous strategies for coping used by students in response to academic and personal pressures. The findings indicate a reliance on problem-solving and emotional support strategies, with significant differences in perceived effectiveness. These strategies for coping are analyzed critically within the Transactional Model framework, providing insights into students' cognitive and behavioral efforts for managing stress. The study finds that students are able to express and employ different coping strategies, but their efficiency varies significantly. This indicates the necessity for specific interventions to improve coping efficacy. To help students manage stress more effectively, educational and mental health solutions are suggested.
