Abstract/Executive Summary

A family's educational background often influences the environment in which children grow up in and consequently shapes their personal and sociocognitive development for academic decision-making. This narrative investigation details the experiences of three Grade 10 students raised in STEM-oriented families. Participants were chosen through purposive sampling and underwent one-on-one online and face-to-face interviews. The interviews were transcribed, and then analyzed through thematic analysis to reveal underlying themes from the recorded data. Four recurring themes were realized: (1) early exposure to STEM-related fields increases the likelihood that students will form interests in STEM-related career paths; (2) academic activeness in school contributes to career-interest formation; (3) self-efficacy and parental intervention determining students’ academic choices, and (4) personal factors contribute to setting collegial and professional career goals. Results revealed that while an increased inclination towards STEM-related interests may arise from being raised in a STEM-oriented family, personal interests of students may still be misaligned with their family's educational expertise if interest and skill toward other fields, besides STEM, are realized during the earlier stages of a student’s development. Additionally, positive external reinforcement and open parental involvement were found to have a positive impact on the confidence and motivation of students to pursue a desired career path. This indicates that a family's educational background partially contributes to a student’s motivation in pursuing academic and career paths.
