Abstract / Executive Summary

The Nova Prime Challenge is a collaborative game-based activity designed for Senior High School students in the Earth and Life Science class adapted from the learning process of Game-based Learning (GbL) Platform with an AI approach. It immerses learners in a futuristic space colonization scenario where they must apply scientific inquiry, ecological principles, and problem-solving skills while addressing SDG 4: Quality Education and SDG 15: Life on Land to enhance learners’ understanding of biological adaptation, ecological interactions, and sustainability through an AI-assisted simulation of scenario generation. Set in the year 2125, learners in a group assume different roles as commander, scientist, biologist, engineer, medic, tactician, and diplomat tasked with establishing a self-sustaining colony on Nova Prime, an exoplanet with distinct biomes and environmental challenges. Structured into four phases, the challenge begins with biome selection and resource allocation, followed by environmental exploration, where groups use critical thinking to analyze and decide how to use their limited resources. Students then draw a conceptual extraterrestrial life form through AI tools, including species identification and adaptation analysis, with the last phase focused on developing long-term sustainability strategies in response to ecological crises. By integrating AI into a scientific simulation, the Nova Prime Challenge provides the potential of a technology-enhanced experiential learning plan to foster critical scientific skills to address simulated ecological challenges through an AI-assisted game-based approach. This study highlights the potential of AI-supported, scenario-based learning and encourages further research in varied science topics and other non-science subjects.
