Assessment of guidance services of Navotas National High School SY 2007-2008: Basis for a proposed living guidance program

Abstract

STATEMENT OF OBJECTIVES

The main purpose of this study was to assess the guidance services of Navotas National High School as basis for the development of a living guidance program from the point of view of students. Specifically, the study aimed to respond to the following purposes:
1. To determine the level of awareness of the student population on the guidance services being offered at Navotas National High School.
2. To identify the basic guidance services availed by the students.
3. To determine the extent of the delivery of the guidance services as perceived by the students.
4. Based on the results of purposes 1 to 3, what proposed living guidance program can be developed?

METHODOLOGY
The study used the Descriptive Survey Method as the main approach in gathering data. This method of research is defined as fact-finding with adequate interpretations in the form of survey needs of the students. It is concerned with assessment in conditions that exist, services that prevail perceptions, beliefs and point of views on attitudes that are felt in the school guidance services which could be a basis for the development of a living guidance program. The respondents of this study were randomly selected students composed of 90 make and 110 female high school student respondents. The researcher took period minutes from the class schedule of the students to accomplish the survey questionnaire. The data gathered from the respondents were analyzed using frequency distribution, the percentage, mean, weighted average and ranking.

FINDING
The major findings of the study were the following:
1. There were two hundred (200) student respondents distributed equally among the four year levels.
Senior students are fairly aware on the guidance services of the school with a mean average of 3.26
Junior students has a limited awareness on the guidance services of the school with a mean average of 2.18
Sophomore students are fairly aware on the guidance services of the school with a mean average of 3.1
Freshman students are fairly aware on the guidance services of the school with a mean average of 3.02
Generally, students under study are fairly aware on the guidance services of the school with a mean average of 2.89. This means that, the guidance counselor should work hard in the orientation and dissemination of information about guidance services for a better understanding and awareness of all the students and other people concern.
2. The services availed by the students are as follows:
Among the senior students the most availed services are counseling services with 72%. Other services landed under below 50%.
Among the junior students the most availed services are information/orientation services with 74%. Other services landed below 50%.
Among the sophomore students the most availed services are information/orientation services 88%. Followed by the special assistance program with 68%. Other services landed below 50%.
Among the freshman students the most availed services are information/orientation services 66%. Other services landed below 50%.
Generally, the students under study find information/orientation services as the most availed service with an average of 67%, followed by counselling services with an average of 50%. Third in rank is the special assistance program rated with 43%, next is testing services with 30%, followed by follow-up services with 26%, then individual inventory with 20%, and lastly placement service with 16.5%. The percentage score means that the student respondents' does not avail adequate services from the guidance program.
3. The extent of the delivery of guidance services as perceived by the students are as follows:
3.1 The extensiveness of guidance organization and administration as perceived by fourth year and third year students received a verbal interpretation of fairly extensive with a mean average of 2.872 and 3.06 respectively. The provisions or conditions under guidance organization and administration are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well, While second ear and first year students rated it as moderately extensive with a mean average of 3.87 and 3.66 respectively. The provisions or conditions under guidance organization and administration are fairly extensive and are functioning well, The scores mean that freshmen and sophomores felt the extensiveness of the guidance organization and administration that juniors and seniors.
3.2 The extensiveness of guidance organization and administration as perceived by the students under study rated with a weighted average of 3.364 which mean fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under guidance organization and administration are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well.
4. As to extensiveness of orientation/information services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 3.016 and 3.3 for junior students which mean failry extensive. The provisions or conditions under orientation/information are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with mean score of 3.73 and 3.94 by freshmen which mean moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under orientation/information services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
5. As to extensiveness of individual inventory services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.65, 3.0 for junior students and 3.49 for freshmen which means fairly extensive.
The provisions or conditions under individual inventory are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.79 which means moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under individual inventory services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
6. As to extensiveness of testing services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 1.86 which means limited that the provisions or conditions are limited in extent and functioning poorly. Juniors rated testing services with 2.7 which mean that it was fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under testing services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.84 and 3.936 by freshmen which means moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under testing services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
7. As to extensiveness of counselling services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.848 and 3.444 for freshmen which mean fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under counselling services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly of the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioining well. While junior rated it wiht a mean score of 3.516 and 3.884 by sophomores which means moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under conselling services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
8. As to extensiveness of remedial and enrichment/placement services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.852 and 2.676 for junior students which means fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under remedial and enrichment/placement services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.732 and 3.696 by freshmen which mean moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under remedial and enrichment/placement services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
9. As to extensiveness of service to administrators, teachers and parents. senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.42 which means limited. The provisions or conditions are limited in extent and functioning poorly. Junior students rated it with a mean score of 2.96 which means faily extensive. The provisions or conditions under service to administrators, teacher and parents are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.87 and 3.74 by freshmen which mean moderately extensive. The provision or conditions under service to administrators, teachers and parents are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
10. As to extensiveness of vocation and career guidance services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.575,2.73 for junior students and 3.42 for freshmen which mean fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under vocation and career guidance services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While only sophomore rated it with a mean score of 3.61 which means moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under vocation and career guidance services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
11. As to extensiveness of follow-up services , senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.66 and 3.016 for junior students which mean fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under follow-up services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.96 and 3.64 by freshmen which mean moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under follow-up services are moderately extensive and are functioning well.
12.As to extensiveness if remedial and enrichment/placement services, senior students rated it with a mean score of 2.852 and 2.676 for junior students which mean fairly extensive. The provisions or conditions under remedial and enrichment/placement services are fairly extensive but are functioning poorly or the provisions or conditions are limited in extent but are functioning well. While sophomores rated it with a mean score of 3.732 and 3.696 by freshmen which mean moderately extensive. The provisions or conditions under remedial and enrichment/placement services are moderately extensive ad are functioning well.
CONCLUSIONS
From the statement of the problem of this study and based on the foregoing findings, the following conclusions are drawn:
1. The students of Navotas National High School under study were failry aware of the guidance services
2. The basic guidance services that were most availed by the students under study were the information.orientation services.
3. The extensiveness of the guidance services being offered and rendered by the guidance office of Navotas National High School was felt by the students as fairly extensive.
4. The proposed living guidance action program developed based on the results of purposes one to three maybe implemented ti address the most common needs f the high school students.

RECOMMENDATIONS
In the light of foregoing findings and conclusions of the study, the following recommendations are presented:
1. The school may hire within budgetary constraints enough full time guidance counselors/psychometricians who have the necessary experience and who can innovatively propose and execute the basic guidance services in school.
2. With the implementation of IRR in RA 9258, the responsibilities may initiate to provide items for guidance counsellors, especially in the public schools, with corresponding or equivalent salaries.
3.Administrators must be guidance oriented and supportive to guidance program and may also motivate faculty involvement in the entire program in beneficial to the students well being.
4. Orientation program on the implementation of the living guidance program can be conducted to administrators, teachers and staff, parents and students at the beginning of the school year for them to understand and internalize theiri roles a nd responsibilities in the program.
5. School counselors may take an inititative to enrol in graduate courses attend seminars, workshops, trainings and conferences and join professional organizations related in guidance and counselling to update, upgrade and modernize theri skills in implmenting programs in guidance and counselling.
6. A similar study can be undertaken considering the following:
a. Involve larger population as respondents in undertaking similar study.
b. Compare the extent of guidance services between public and private schools.
c. Conduct validation for its appropriateness and suitability
7. A continuous periodic evaluation may be undertaken to determine the extent of performance of the persons involved that contribute to the proper implementation of the living guidance program of the school.
